Take notes, there will be a test on this : Lean muscle is a result of synthesis of micellular proteins, peptides, lipids and other compounds too numerous to mention, in combination with individiually predetermined genetic triggers. Basic mass as well as mass potential is mostly predetermined by genetics. An important protein component L-Glutamine is occurs most frequntly in muscle tissues( I think with the exception of smooth muscle tissue[if I remeber correctly]).

Excercise, particularly weight training to increase mass, involves using resistance(weight)to contract muscles and "crunching" individual muscle cells. Assuming proper levels of basic metabolic components, when the cell repairs after being "crunched" it enlarges due mostly to increased water retention(creatine improves this process). During the contraction, cell waste(lactic acid)is released and carried away by the blood. Another by-product: homocystine actually induces catabolism(anti-metabolism)and can adversely effect muscle growth. The use of creatine and creatine GCC also helps with this toxic byproduct.

Basically, intake of proteins through supplementing or consuming lean meats increases the body's available store of metabolic compunds. Consequently, increased protein intake decreases(generally)fat and carbohydrate intake resuling in loss of body fat stores. Fat stores are metabolized(burned) for energy and the protein is used , along with weight training, for muscle synthesis. Any questions?
