    Default Food dehydrator

Hi! Happy New a Year! I am looking at getting a dehydrator. I have received a $50 gc to Lowe’s, so I was wondering if anyone had experience with the chard 10 tray dehydrator they are selling. They do not stock them in store around me, so I have no way of getting a good look at one.....

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Nesco-5-Tra...drator/4595929 I use the Nesco and it works. I can make my own low sodium jerky and have dried fruit and made gravel. You may have to order on line and have it shipped to your store and pay the difference.
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Well first think about your needs. If it's just for occasional camping food you probably don't need the chard unit. We use one like the Nesco with only four trays and it's been great. But I don't know. Maybe you do need a maxed out monster like the chard:

    $129.99

    • Provides more than 1700 square inches of dehydrating space
    • 800-watt heating element provides sufficient power for large dehydrating jobs

How many lbs of jerky are you able to make in 1 shot? I am looking to use it for more than just backpacking....

you'll only cry once if you buy one of these.

can hold about 10-15 lbs of raw meat sliced into strips.

Haunt the local yard sales. Someone always has one for sale.

Have you heard much one way or the other about the Magic Mill dehydrators? I've got an Excalibur as well, but the Magic Mill's look like a great alternative to their product line with similar features and better pricing. Reviews seem solid.

my only experience is the Nesco or Sunbeam type round ones (they suck) and the Excalibur.
I think the link you posted shows promise. Had I seen that when I bought the Excalibur, I may have gone that route.

Tipi Walter does a lot of dehydrating using his Excalibur dehydrator. You might check out his threads as he shows what he has prepared on his.

I like my Magic Mill. The construction is durable and the heat control and air flow is fine.

( I didn’t know that the 40 year wedding anniversary gifts were dehydrators. )

I also hooked up my dehydrator to a timer that would turn the unit on & off at set times.

I have a Presto 6 tray, round, with digital temp and timer. It was around $60 from Amazon, and I've dehydrated tons of stuff just fine. If I had to complain about something it would be the round trays. Sometimes you want to put stuff on parchment paper and it would be so much easier to just rip off a square of it, but that's not often so I dont mind it much.

Actually, I use a 10 tray TSM dehydrator with large shelves and only use Excalibur silicone dehydrator sheets for the liquid stuff. Here's the thing in action---

I have the Excalibur and it is a great dehydrator. Get some of the silicone sheets for it if you like to dehydrate any fruit or veggie leathers or other soupy meal items like spaghetti and mini-meatballs.

It's a little overpriced but the unit can be serviced at home with minimal fuss---like if the fan motor burns out it's easy to buy a replacement at around $25 and replace with a screwdriver.
