Do you see this as a good thing for Damascus? I suppose it will help take some of the load off the Hf ATC . What's your thoughts on this? And how far is it from your hostel?

i don't see how a 3/4 million dollar visitor center is gonna draw more folks to Damascus. the Virginia Creeper Trail fuels this town. AT hikers are here for about 3 months and don't spend much $.

750,000 $ for a visitor center wow , expensive land, big building or over priced construction? What's the reason for another ATC the Hf ATC over whelmed I suppose? Maybe with the ATC more hikers will be spending more time and $ 's..

Who pays for this, the ATC itself and how do they raise that much money?

Ooops yeah my bad I should have read the article before asking a bunch of questions. Well I don't know how it couldn't bring more hikers and bikers into town. Which in return means them spending more money in town.

Both the Appalachian Regional Commission and Tobacco Regional Revitalization Commission are tax payer funded. The center will not draw in enough new tax dollars to even cover the ongoing operating expenses. Tax payers will be subsidizing it's operation.

    Good to hear that.

Has the ATC shared how much (if any) of the operational cost will be born by the Conservancy?

At a minimum, I would think ATC might need to add a few more employees to the hundred or so now on the payroll.

That's fine with me, I don't use tobacco products but there's alot worse things that my tax dollars pay for. Not quite sure why such a big extravagant building like a catholic church but whatever. How does the ATC itself pay it's employees and taxes and utilities, etc, etc,? From these 2 groups that's funding the building? And Damascus could use a decent place to eat, just saying.

Decent place to eat? What Cowboys isn't good enough for you?

It costs a lot of money to build pretty much anything these days.

But one does have to wonder if there wasn't an existing building which could have been renovated for a fraction of a new building.

As to whether or not it will increase the number of tourists, that remains to be seen.
