Default Virginia this MAY.....SNP ...... will hike North or South

Greetings fellow hikers, I'll be at a wedding in Northern VA this May and figure why not and hike up and down the AT after the wedding.

I'm not a runner but like to keep moving....travel very light

Hoping to put in about two weeks of relaxed faster paced hiking

Lets start an Email conversation and plan on a great May hike in Virginia's SNP

If you plan it right the Waysides open in May, makes resupply much easier.

The Waysides open in April. The camp stores don't open until mid May. The Waysides stock snacks, but most have freeze dried meals. And beer.

May should be pretty good. We hiked it in April and there were no leaves on the trees; cold and sort of desolate.

It can get pretty chilly there in late April and early May. I had a 28 degree night the first week of May in 2018. Damn near froze that night. But two days later is was in the 80's and then stayed warm.

That's a good time of year. I have hiked sections there twice in early to mid-May. Temperatures can be all over the place, but on average very good

One route option: go south from Front Royal. You can start light and take advantage of the supply options in SNP, and then potentially take a day in Waynesboro and continue south from there. I enjoyed the section south of Waynesboro; it is quieter than SNP and has a good mix of challenge and scenery

Waynesboro to Glassglow is on my top 10 sections list.

The SNP? It's just kind of in the way. Always spend too much money going through the SNP too. It's really hard to walk by the Waysides...

Yes hard to pass up the breakfast sandwiches and fresh coffee. But $5. For a cup of soup is crazy

If you've got two weeks you could easily hike from Elkwallow Wayside in the SNP down to the James River foot bridge, about 165 miles.
