Default Sam's Gap to Damascus over the next couple of weeks

Saturday afternoon I'll be starting a section hike from Sam's to Hampton and probably on through to Damascus. Any news of the trail, shelters, etc...in that section? I'm not seeing any notes from early thru-hikers so hopefully all is well. I see that Overmountain and Watauga Lake shelters are no more but there is a new one at 404---Mtn Falls Shelter. What other changes should I anticipate? What are some "musts" in that area for mid-March? Thanks,

    Correct.
Overmountain Shelter aka The Barn, Apple House, and Watauga Lake are all closed. The grounds around the barn and the privy are still open for camping. Camp at the barn a must.

Camp at Unaka Deep Gap a must.

A side trip up to Grassy Bald is optional but has 360 views.

Stay at Mountain Harbour Hostel. The food is awesome from what I hear.

From US321 to Wilbur Dam Road (at Big Laurel Branch Wilderness boundary) is closed to camping and lakeside activities. Hiking through is allowed.

Camp at Uncle Nicks grave for a possible haunting night.
