The AT used to pass through all dry counties in NC. That made crossing into VA a special treat. Even today, outside of a couple of trail towns where beer is allowed, the counties are otherwise dry.

Within walking distance of the campground, all I could find was a corner store that sold a limited variety of beer.

The nearest ABC store is in Weaverville, NC, about 26 miles south along US 25. You can get beer and wine at Tobacco Road Burley and Brew, which is smack in the middle of Hot Springs, though.

I remember it well. Went thru Hot Springs in 1977 on the day Elvis died. One hiker was so distraught he bought a bottle of Jack Daniels to drown his sorrow. I stopped in to use the phone and the owner asked if I was from Michigan because of my accent. I took that as an insult.

Madison Co, NC is a dry county. No ABC stores. Marshall, Hot Springs, and Mars Hill are self regulating when it comes to beer & wine sales.
