Saunders Shelter

I'm going to get out for the night and do Elk Garden to Damascus and I'm considering hiking to Saunders Shelter the first day. I have done this section, but my memory isn't great. It seems like I pressed on past here before to get down to water. Is there a water source near this shelter? If memory serves this is an old shelter that is down a spur trail from the AT and it is actually on the old AT (iron mountain trail)? Thanks -- Heavy

no. saunders is a newer shelter. the iron mtn. trail is not anywhere near it. there is a water source there

Walk past shelter and down old fs road 100 yards. Spring in the turn of the road. I did Elk Garden to Damascus on an overnight as well. Stopped at Saunders, very nice tenting around the shelter
