Temporary Reroute, Mass--Late December

A logging operation on State Forest lands between Pittsfield Rd (Washington Mtn Rd) and West Branch Rd will be underway around the dates of December 21st and 25th, 2020. The dates are approximate as the work is dependent on equipment and weather conditions. During work near and on the A.T., Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Forestry Department will place signs directing hikers to follow a temporary reroute on Pittsfield Rd (Washington Mtn Rd) and West Branch Rd to bypass the work area. Trail visitors are not permitted in the work area during logging operations.

Northbound hikers at the West Branch Rd trail crossing should proceed north (right) on West Branch Rd and continue 0.6 miles to Pittsfield Rd (also known as Washington Mtn Rd), then turn west (left) on Pittsfield Rd for 0.9 miles to rejoin the A.T.

Southbound hikers at the Pittsfield Rd trail crossing should proceed east (left) on Pittsfield Rd (also known as Washington Mtn Rd) 0.9 miles then turn south (right) on West Branch Rd and continue 0.6 miles to rejoin the A.T.

The Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation Forestry Management Dept has contracted for the removal of non-native Norway Spruce planted in the 1930's from several acres of State Forest between Pittsfield Rd and West Branch Rd. Native hardwood and softwood trees will be left in place as seed stock for regrowth. Interpretive signage for visitors about the intent of the operation have been placed on the Trail both north and south of the work area. Temporary reroute signs will be placed directing hikers onto Pittsfield Rd and West Branch Rd while the work is being done in areas adjacent the Trail.

The immediate result of the work, which may appear disturbing to Trail visitors--especially those familiar with this area--is needed to remove non-native, human-planted trees that have reached the end of their lifespan and are decaying. The trees form a dense overstory that suppresses natural forest succession and have a negative effect on the overall health and diversity of the forest. Native hardwood forest will re-establish itself through the seed stock from retained native trees within and surrounding the work area. There will be a period of early successional transition which will include a vigorous understory of brush and saplings. This habitat is typically attractive to wildlife, including moose and bears, which are found in the surrounding native forests. The logged areas will be monitored for invasive plant species; areas that develop invasive populations will be treated as needed to limit any expansion.
