Summertime: most of the time my hiking shorts, shirt and an umbrella work great for me! if its a downpour I will probably put on my rain jacket. Rainpants dont get packed in the summer

I remember hiking through Pennsylvania and it rained almost all day, almost every day, and most of the night. Then I used an army surplus poncho that draped over the pack. Not ideal. Now we carry a full Frogg Toggs suit plus an umbrella. In light storms we just use the umbrella, then maybe add the jacket, then if it's really bad add the pants. We've had our original FT suit for more than 15 years and it's still great. Ran a bunch of ultramarathons wearing just the jacket too. Pretty good for that, warm and windproof. Only downside is that water can accumulate in the sleeves.

I was happy with a Lightheart Gear polysil this past summer. Not breathable, but light and waterproof. Generally wore it when temp 65F or less. To me it’s not really for keeping dry but keeping away from hypothermia.
