Happy Hiking Average Hiker, the BMT is (mostly) a special route IMO, great choice! If you go in summer there may be some bush-whacking / briar-wading in sections as that trail gets nowhere near the maintenance love of the AT (even in the Smokies).

    TN Hiker,

I ran into Sgt Rock and his son fly fishing at West Prong (camp site 18) in the Smokies about a year ago. They were getting into tenkara and having a blast.

Agree with TNhiker's recommendation of Sgt. Rock's guidebook. Here's the complete list of what we used for navigation: (This was before Guthook's app was available, but it's still a good idea to have a paper map backup.)

We actually did the BMT/AT loop and our resupply strategy was:
    1. AT Mile 30.7 Drop at Neels Gap
    2. BMT Mile 48.5 Purchase at Cherry Log grocery. (See 6/1 entry for more info.)
    3. BMT Mile 109.7 Drop at Webb Brothers Store & Float Service in Reliance TN
    4. BMT Mile 197 Bear Vault Stash in GSMNP
    5. AT Mile 238.3 Purchase at Standing Bear Hostel
    6. AT Mile 134.9 Drop at the NOC

As PatmanTN says, be ready for possibility of overgrown trail in summer (including trail-filled fields of poison ivy)! Long dress socks may help in avoid the poison ivy rash, but if my memory is correct, long pants were the only thing that protected our legs in the overgrown briar patches. Here's a sample picture of an overgrown stretch:

and fwiw----the smokies section is probably the easiest to follow...

as in, the trails are fairly wide and every intersection is marked......

other spots it can be a "hmmmm...wonder if im on trail......wonder which way the trail goes from this intersection"
