Default Stringbean smashing the record right now!

current supported record is held by Michael Versteeg at 15d 22h 39m 0s

Joe has about 464 of the 800 miles completed in 7 days! I had to edit because for some reason my brain told me the AZT was only 534 miles. Oops. Anyway, he still is on pace to smash the record by a couple of days if his "average" stays as high.

What does "supported" mean? Does someone meet him with gear or food or both? That sounds like a crazy pace

Exactly. Self supported implies that you're never stepping foot in a vehicle or otherwise receiving support. Anything beyond that qualifies as supported, whether it's simply meeting you at the occasional trailhead with water bottles or going all out with setting up a tent at the end of the day for you, etc.

he has 2 support "teams." they provide him with food, water, whatever. supported also means you can have pacers. They also set up a tent for him to sleep. He's slowing down. The lack of sleep is catching up to him. They even change his shoes and socks for him.

You can see his support team updates on youtube. Joe carries just some water and snacks.

Thanks, not being familiar with this, I thought he was back packing. This is trail running. Quite a feat. I would have to pay someone serious money to change my socks after 18 hours on the trail.

Day 10 completed 625 miles. 163 miles to go. Day 10 was completed yesterday I believe as the video was posted about 2am (central time)???

At this rate he will finish in just over 12 days, or perhaps slightly less depending on if he does a push through the last night. I don't know if that's feasible as I don't know the route. But either way he's on pace to break the record by about 2+ days.

So he quit. Then he got back on and then hit snow where he was postholing for miles. So he quit again (if I read it right). But now he is headed back out as he has something like 2.5 days left and about 70 something miles to do. So we shall see what happens.

He's got some real mental toughness to find his limit, then keep going back for more.

Question of protocol here. Wouldn't quitting and leaving the trail be end of a continuous run record of this type, or does the clock stop and start with the first step of each day regardless if there was time away from the attempt?

Clock runs from the beginning of the attempt to the end. Supported, he could go into town every night and sleep at a motel if he wanted. So as long as he completes the attempt faster than the previous by the continuous clock, he will have the new record once verified.

Since it's a supported attempt, I don't see where it matters. Just a continuous clock from first step to the finish.

You know what they say about assuming but I assume this is protocol since it's a supported attempt. Did he leave trail like to a town or just hang out in a van at a trailhead? Not that, that should matter either.

70 miles and 2.5 days to finish shoot he could take a big old power nap and power food and a David Goggins video and go out and knock that last 70 miles out in 1 day!
