Go to New York-New Jersey Trail Conference site (nynjtc.org). Maps, books, information, they have it all.
Take Metro North to the AT train stop near Pawling. Only runs 1x a day only on weekends. If its not stopping there right now take it to Pawling and hike either N Or S on the AT
Ride the Shortline Bus from the NY Port Authority Terminal to Bear Mountain

Hike north and spend the night at the William Brien Shelter, ten miles away.
Continue north on The Trail and, after coming down Agony Grind, walk south on Highway 17 towards Southfields
On the west side of the road you'll find a Valero Convenience Store.

Just north of this is "Old Orange Turnpike," at which you'll be able to take another Short Line Bus back to the Port Authority Terminal.

You'll have to flag down this Short Line / Coach USA bus as it comes south on the road, but this should be no problem.
The bus symbols in the zoom-in

shows where, at that intersection, the bus will pick you up. The beauty salon is still across the street.
OR you can walk NORTH on Highway 17 to the Harriman Station of the Metro North train

Thanks so much!
The train may not be stopping there during the pandemic. If go to Pawling come out of the train station and walk on Charles Colmen blvd. to a four corners at West Dover Road. Continue straight on this road to the AT. Depending on your mood you can go either way. Come to think of it, they are not stopping at Manitou or Breakneck ridge either.
Do you have a car? If so, there's a multitude of options from quite a few parking areas at Harriman State Park.
Public transit to Tuxedo is good, and a short walk to the trailhead.

The trail stops on Metro-North and short line buses are still closed (like other folks have pointed out) Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail is really great! You get a full sampling of Harriman and climb Pingyp which is the park's steepest climb. You can take NJTranist right out Suffern and walk to the trail, ends right at the Bear Mountain Inn too so a fairly easy place to get a ride out of with Manitou station closed.
