A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world. ~Paul Dudley White
From the website link in post#1:
7/06: Corey ran just about 8 miles to Slide Mtn Rd then appears to have stopped and taken a zero on 7/07, starting again early on 7/08. This puts him ~ 140 miles behind Karel's pace, which isn't recoverable.
Yep I think you can stick a fork in Corey he's pretty much done.
Kristian is just 6.4 miles behind Karel. Go warriors!!
The Five Basic Principles of Going Lighter ~ Cam "Swami" Honan of OZ
The FKT website now says "end" (But not DNF), but at 170 miles behind, it would seem to be far past over.
FKT website now shows him 19 miles behind as of 7/8.
Observation: As these times get pushed faster every few years, I would expect the margins (from previous to new record) to become smaller and smaller. These guys/gals are pushing the limits of human endurance AND logistics. Pretty much everything has to go according to plan and schedule. Weather, injury, support, etc. become crucial. Losing half a day is losing 25 miles to the pace.
I am wondering if LW or others involved in these attempts as support would add some comments on how the gear, support crew, logistics, planning etc. has changed over the years? Things like cell phones, tracking devices, access to weather, shoe technology, etc. on supported and/or unsupported attempts?

Corey Nunlist on Appalachian Trail
In progress
Athlete: Corey Nunlist
Route: Appalachian Trail
Start date: 2021-06-24
Style: Supported
Status: In progress
My friend Kyler and I are attempting a supported northbound FKT on the Appalachian Trail starting tomorrow morning. I'm carrying an inreach for live tracking purposes, and a Garmin watch for backup and to see what time it is and stuff. I've shared the inreach link with a number of people, and will post my progress publicly, but on a delay, at mycnat.com. This website is a work in progress.
6/24: to Unicoi Gap (same as Karel Sabbe) 52.3 miles
6/25: to Rock Gap (keeping up with Karel) 105.4 miles total
6/26: to Fontana, Hwy 28, 162.6 miles (about 6 miles ahead)
6/27: to Newfound Gap, 207.7 miles (2.7 miles behind)
6/28: to Max Patch Rd, 254.3 miles (5.8 miles behind)
6/29: just short of Little Laurel Shelter, about 294 miles (~16.8 miles behind)
6/30: to Nolichucky River, 344.3 miles (19.7 miles behind)
7/01: to a bit past Carver's Gap, 384.2 miles (35.3 miles behind)
7/02: to Wilbur Dam Rd, 433.0 miles (38.1 miles behind)
7/03: Corey's tracker failed (but he recorded the day with his Garmin watch). At Damascus, VA, Kyler obtained a replacement InReach. End Day 10 at US-58, 487.8 miles.
7/04: to US-11 / Atkins, VA 545.7 miles
7/05: to US-52 / Bland, VA 591.8 miles (44.1 miles behind after 12 days)
7/06: Corey ran just about 8 miles to Slide Mtn Rd then appears to have stopped and taken a zero on 7/07, starting again early on 7/08. This puts him ~ 140 miles behind Karel's pace, which isn't recoverable.
7/08: end ~ Sugar Run at about 625 miles in 15 days, about 170 miles behind

IMHO hitting a good run of weather is a major impact and that is mostly luck. A good support team can deal with the lack of water but in the East, dry summer weather usually lines up with hot weather and that is going to slow down any runner to some extent. Alternatively with hurricanes now coming earlier and earlier a heavy rain event can really screw up daily miles. So even the best runner with great support is still dependent on the luck of the draw when it comes to weather.

Corey's status:
7/08: end ~ Sugar Run at about 625 miles in 15 days, about 170 miles behind
7/10: end at VA-42, 677.6 miles
7/11: end at Catawba Creek, 706.5 miles
7/12: end at Daleville / US-220, 730.3 miles
He's averaging about 38mpd. and appears to be slowing down. As you can see he was 170 miles behind on 7/8. Too much to overcome more than likely but I like that he's hanging in there. Maybe will give him some good info for another attempt if he actually finishes the AT this year.
