Default FKT attempt on AT start 6/24

    https://fastestknowntime.com/tracking

Corey Nunlist set off on a supported attempt. Don't know who he is. Don't know his "creds." He has no other FKTs according to the site.

I bet the heat does him in. PA/NJ/NY will be brutal. He should have started a month ago when it was still cool

It definitely would have worked to his advantage. The dog days are here for sure. But it doesn't seem to have a phased the guy out on the PCT,FKT.

West coast rarely has the humidity. Evaporative cooling from sweating is incredibly effective with low relative humidity. A hiker running along a ridge out west will cool fairly effectively as long as he hydrates and deals with electrolyte loss, on a supported run this can be dealt with. HVAC engineers use two temperature readings, dry bulb and wet bulb. Dry bulb is the temp most thermometers read. Wet bulb is tied to relative humidity, if you see condensation on a beer can, it only happens when the beer temp is lower than the wet bulb. West coast dry bulb is typically high while wet bulb is low. Folks out west away from the coast can use "swamp coolers" to cool their house by spraying a fine mist of water into the airstream. The mist evaporates and cools the air down. Out east the wet bulb is frequently close to the dry bulb so no real cooling happens when sweating. The water just stays water instead of evaporating thus no cooling. Not much demand for swamp coolers on the east coast. At some point at high temps with high relative humidity even standing in the wind no longer really cools as the air cant absorb the vapor.

Therefore even though average temps may be lower along the AT during the run, the effective heat stress can be higher due to reduces effectiveness of sweating.

That's exactly right peakbagger and a great explanation. Being a plumber/ h.v.a.c. tech for 37 years makes since. On the AT in the summer your never dry because of the humidity. Which will have a huge effect!

I think you accidentally posted to the wrong thread. This thread is about FKT on the AT. The data you posted is for the PCT. The current FKT PCT thread is:

Yep, before the arrival of this cool front we were experiencing an absolutely brutal heat/humidity combo. And it will return. This morning it's a wonderful 59°F, although still extremely humid.

Also, folks out west sometimes fail to appreciate fully the roughness of trails here in the NE.

As of 7/01 he's 35.3 miles behind. He started to slow down going through the Smokies. He should be finishing up NC about now, but that means he no longer has the advantage of the cooler high elevation temps.

FYI, they don't post every day but sometimes when they post they post a "day by day."
