    Default personal locator

I have 108 Miles to complete on the trail. Monson to Katadin. Last year I had a stress fracture and had to leave the trail after walking 5 miles on a sore foot . My question is can I rent a personal locator that has the ablility to call for help and I get rescue insurance?

I haven't seen anything about needing rescue insurance in ME. What kind of communication do you want to perform. A SPOT device is about $100 and there is one plan that has a monthly charge where you could cancel.

    Monthly plan

I have used the lower generation model previously. It's functionality was limited. There are different models now too and other devices from different manufacturers.

Rescues are "'free" in Maine. NH has the Hike Safe Card ($25) as they charge for rescues. A PLB (no subscription but no communication is around $250 bucks for a McMurdo Fast find. American Alpine society used to offer rescue insurance.

Technically, Maine can charge people for rescue costs under §10105.4 ( http://legislature.maine.gov/statute...2sec10105.html ) but it rarely does so except in cases of extreme negligence and/or not following the rules - like entering Baxter and camping without registering, and then climbing Katahdin without registering, in winter, and then needing to be rescued https://bangordailynews.com/2015/01/...ch-and-rescue/ . Even then, whether or not they could actually enforce collection of such a bill is unclear.

Here is one I found for $10 for the first four days plus $3 per additional day from arrival date to ship back date. Somewhere under shipping is an estimated shipping time. Don't know the shipping cost. No personal experience with PLB's directly

REI might rent them or work with some companies.

Googling REI personal locator beacon rental gave some good results

Here is an excellent website especially for dealing with PLB related issues.

Perhaps somebody on this site can loan one or rent one cheaper for 108 miles.

It sounds like the emergency you are most concerned with is likely one you could sit beside the trail with for a couple days if needed while waiting for assistance. If you are on the AT, you will not be alone. If you don't want to invest in satellite communications, you could always manage the old fashion way and ask for assistance from a passer by, even if that help is just asking them to pass on the message that you need help.

Ive been planning my hike for the HMW and came across this guy: http://100milewilderness.info/

He claims to know all the access points in the HMW and can get one out if needed. Of course you have to be able to contact him.

Woah - I didn't know they'd reinstated the monthly plans. That was one of the big things that killed Spot in my mind the last couple of years when they were contract only.
