Default Snow on Mt Washington today

Looking at the summit cam it looks like the summit has snow that is sticking. It usually happens before the last week in September. It will no doubt melt off in a day or so but a sign that its time to up the gear folks carry. Anyone on the AT had best be heading south.

I don't know about it melting any time soon. The sun has to come out first and that doesn't happen until the middle of next week (maybe) in the mean time, more icing is likely. I'm expecting to see white capped peaks when the clouds finally clear out.

BTW, there was a group shot taken on top of Katahdin in the last few days with the group standing in snow.

Is the trail to the peak still open?

BSP really trIE to keep Mt Katahdin summit trails open to October 15th but mother nature has veto rights. Its supposed to be in the mid to high sixties later in the week so any snow will melt quick. Washington is roughly 1000 feet higher than Katahdin and snow this time of year is very elevation dependent. My guess is they got up early on cloudy day so the overnight snow had not melted. The probably got wet cold feet but if the sun broke out they would be in short sleeves and shorts heading down.
