    Default Clothing Primer

I am a bit slow to change but when I started backpacking over 30 years ago I read the NOLS book (I understand they now have several instead of the 1 I started with) and learned about different fabrics and their pros and cons for staying warm and dry. Over the years I have picked up a piece here or there. About 10 years ago I switched to silk for my base layer. And generally I am pretty happy with what I have and prefer not to spend more money when what I have works well for me. Though I do need to replace my puffy soon.

But there's a group of ladies that want to get together for a discussion about fabrics and layers. I was hoping someone out there knows a good simple resource that covers all that's available now that I could consult. I have the basics so it doesn't have to be too detailed but when someone asks "why not polyester" or "is merino wool better than XXX" I want to be able to give them some info to help them choose what works for them and not just what works for me. Plus, yeah, I could probably use a bit of education since I will be doing more backpacking in the next year than I have done in the last 10!
    Thanks in Advance!

I recently stumbled on this video. It's about 15 minutes long (my limit for watching videos of almost any sort), but I thought it was good information about the different materials and types of baselayers, what is good versus what is marketing hype, etc. Sounds like simple fundamentals, but I thought it was well done and I learned some things; maybe you will find it useful:
