Thread: 25% Marker?

  1. #1

    Default 25% Marker?

We recently passed the 500 miles rocks in Grayson Highlands, someone mentioned that there are 25% rocks further north, but I can't find where. Around Atkins? North or South of I-81?

Memory serves it got bad around Harrisburg as you go northbound.

Sorry, bad syntax. "Rocks" meaning trail marker formed by rocks. Rocks formed into "500" to designate 500 mile point. Rocks formed into "25%" to designate 25% point. Leaving aside that the trail shifts, and renders the markers obsolete.
Since posting I found a trail journal that puts the 25% rocks at mile 547, just north of Atkins.

I think this is what you're referring to... sign at Tilson Gap about 9 miles north of Atkins. Photo taken in 2015.

It's all good in the woods.

Turns out it's made of sticks, not rocks:

The trail is currently 2193 miles long, so it is easy to figure mileage for 25%, 50%, etc., and then use a trail guide to figure where that mileage occurs. There are no official markers, just what some hiker may make from rocks or sticks.

There actually are some official markers:

    AT halfway marker.jpg

Halfway marker south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park in PA. I think the PATC moves it every time the trail length changes.

    AT 1500 miles.jpg

    1500 miles NOBO, in Connecticut

There wasn't anything official for 1000 miles NOBO or SOBO, probably because they are so close to the halfway point.

    I stand corrected.
