Is there a benefit (*) to carrying the ATC Hangtag while thru hiking or is it just a cool memento?
(*) discounts? sherpa services? free massages? turn down service with a chocolate on your pillow each night?

LOL....no. It means you signed in at one of the places where they issue them. It means you have a number for when you stepped onto the trail that year. It means you might have paid attention to a LNT talk. The LNT stuff is printed on the backside of the hangtag.

Hammock hangs are where you go into the woods to meet men you've only known on the internet so you can sit around a campfire to swap sewing tips and recipes. - sargevining on HF

From the ATC website:
”The primary purpose of the A.T. hangtag is to promote sustainable hiking practices aligned with Leave No Trace principles. Hangtags also provide a way for hikers to celebrate their thru-hikes and section hikes of the A.T.”
A sustainable piece of plastic....hmmm.
Hiker bling, nothing more.
Termite fart so much they are responsible for 3% of global methane emissions.
In the “good ol’ days”, many hikers celebrated trails they H(L)iked with patches sewn onto a pack, or medallions on a hiking stick. I just thought of these tags as being along the same line. Although the patches and medallions have a cost to help the specific trail, these are free, yet aid the trail with LNT principles handy on one side. Most pick them up in Springer or Monson, so there is a price to pay in visiting the ATC and getting their informational talk. The one in Monson for Nobo’s actually helps planning for Baxter rules and Summit procedures clear so that Katahdin can continue to be the Terminus of the AT. I think they are nice and help distinguish those hiking the trail each year. As with anything it’s personal and to each their own (HYOH).
