Default Harriman State Park in NY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Due to substantial flooding, trail damage, road damage, and bridge washouts from a storm on 7-9, the state has closed Harriman SP until further notice.
What this means for thru hikers I'm not sure, but I do know that supposedly the section of the AT that goes over Bear Mountain is impassable at this time.

Prepare accordingly, and please be careful if you decide to hike through the park at this time.

Due to major storm damage, Bear Mountain State Park will be closed until further notice. Please use caution when traveling in the area, and be sure to check your local park and news sources for up-to-date road and trail closures before heading out.

    • The Timp-Torne, 1777W, and 1779 trails are impassable where they cross the Popolopen Gorge due to the bridge being washed out.
    • The Appalachian Trail from the Bear Mountain Inn to the top of Bear Mountain at Perkins Tower is impassable due to multiple washouts. “

Kind of sad, that section was such a work of art.

Parts of the park have re-opened, but the Bear Mountain area is still closed.

I'm not saying this is safe or open but if you come down to Arden Valley Road, you can walk through completely on the road to Seven Lakes drive and up and around to Seven Lakes drive again but if the roads are totally impassable
then maybe not. Safety in of the utmost.

Bear Mountain State Park remains closed at this time, with the AT and many other nearby trails washed out and in need of major repair work.
Thru hikers should use caution when traveling through Harriman State park, and be prepared to detour in this area.
    Stay safe.

The 7/21 post has a map and directions. Not sure if they are posted anywhere on the trail, but at least could be referenced from that posting/link.

I am a member of the crew that did most of that work from Elk Pen to Perkins Drive........I would love to see pics of how some of that work held up.

The latest update states that only thru hikers are allowed in this section of the park, and has the following map:

    Latest update:

    https://www.nynjtc.org/trail-alerts/...e-park-closure

No major changes, and the small changes don't really affect AT thru hikers.
