A few of us from church were planning a Apple Harvest hike on the trail next month. Since the hostel is near by, were going to use it as a base for our grand hike. By question is, when are the Apples ready in that area? Hey, it's 0630 hours. I need a few more Bananas to write this. (Or is that Cowbells?)

A few of us from church were planning a "Apple Harvest" hike next month. Since the hostel is near by, we are planning to use that as a base while we hike the trail. Does anyone know when the Apples (In the near by Apples orchards.) are ready? It would really be great to be on the trail During that time.

A lot depends on the variety of apple. In PA there is a diverse apple crop with different harvest seasons starting as early as late July for some varieties. In the New England States mid September typically marks the start of harvest season that trails into early November. This, of course, is relative to the location of the orchard, weather conditions during the growing season, and the variety of apple being harvested. Best bet is to call a few large orchards in the area you are looking at to see when to expect harvest season given the wet weather that has plagued the region this year.

Some places got a rather late cold spell into May, and many things were damaged due to that - some crops were not available at all for some farms.

Apples seem to be OK around here in NY (we are north of the AT, more parallel to the MA sections), but that may not be the case in all areas, depending on how far along they were in development in each area, and what protection the various orchards have available (a couple locally use large wind machines to stir up the air, preventing much of the frost from developing, but not all places may have that capacity due to costs).

BTW, much of the apple crop in Norhern New England, NH ME and VT got wiped out by a frost this spring that wiped out the blossoms.
