A lot depends on the variety of apple. In PA there is a diverse apple crop with different harvest seasons starting as early as late July for some varieties. In the New England States mid September typically marks the start of harvest season that trails into early November. This, of course, is relative to the location of the orchard, weather conditions during the growing season, and the variety of apple being harvested. Best bet is to call a few large orchards in the area you are looking at to see when to expect harvest season given the wet weather that has plagued the region this year.
