Knife Edge
The A.T. on Katahdin (also known as the Hunt Trail) ends at Baxter Peak. The Knife Edge trail continues over the mountain and comes down the other side, so while it ends at the summit, it is not part of the Appalachian Trail.
That being said, I think the folks in this picture are insane!
Thats a great picture. Any idea when it was taken? The time of the year is what makes it scary. When I reached it in late August last year it wasn't as narrow as I percieved it to be in pictures. Thanks for the link.
It's safer than it looks, I'm sure they have crampons on. People do this sort of thing all the time, on mountains all over the world. Would I do it? No

With crampons on and some idea of how to use them, they would be perfectly safe. I would probably fix some rope, though.

They are not thru-hikers. As you read in tlbj6142's link above, it was a winter hiking trip. BSP has regulations for winter camping and hiking including approval of equipment, party size and routes. I belive the Hunt Trail (the AT) is closed in winter. Perhaps TEEJ can verify that. This party came up the east side from Chimney Pond (opposite from the AT).
As for the Knife Edge, it's a great hike in the summer. I did it some years ago. In winter it's a whole 'nother story.
It was posted on VFTT by a member named Gimpy as part of a display of winter hiking pictures. These include many of the Whites and some of K in conditions thru hikers generally don't see them. Awesome set of photos.
