I see this came out awhile ago (but just reading it now).

Personally, I've found some really sweet things at local thrift stores. Love them! Keep looking every week or so and some high end hiking clothes and gear can end up there. Making it a game to find the right stuff for super cheap is fun. The cheap wool sweater and long underwear I got at the thrift store I plan to just discard in a trail town as it gets warmer - don't even want to waste the money on mailing them back home.

Best find? Old aluminum ski poles that I use as trekking poles... $2.

The best clothing tip I ever got. Women's athletic tees are fab + cheap. I ordered a pile of them online for the summer hiking season, based on your info. C9 is branded and sold by Tarszhay. Another model with a slightly heavier weave is sold by others as Champion Double Dry. Where I live, women's athletic clothing is limited to high end name brand stuff, often cutesy rather than utilitarian. More good news this year: suppliers are much more responsive than in the past. Two days after placing my orders -- boom! -- good stuff came to my doorstep. Thanks, Mags.

I needed some small buckles, so I went to my local dollar store and bought cheap dog harnesses for, of course, $1.00 each. I harvested 3 buckles, plus some thin webbing from each one--and they come in different sizes! Very cool.

It was 1/2 price Wednesday at the local Salvation Army yesterday. I bought a new Black Diamond polartec fleece pullover for $3.50. It was my size and a nice shade of gray.

Best article I've ever read.... I am surprised that all of the people that claim you have to have all of the new/expensive stuff is not on here making the post negative. This article is gold! Thank you.

Great info! I could kick myself in the butt for all the wasted money I have spent buying gear. I was the typical foolish guy who did not research before buying at the beginning! Now I'm giving away or "gifting" all the stuff I bought in the past.

I found a Marmot goose down vest, black, XL and in perfect condition at the Salvation Army last week. It was $7. Way too big for me. I hope it found a good owner who will take it on lots of adventures.
