Cumberland Trail big dig - volunteers needed

The Cumberland Trail Association is looking for lots of volunteers to help put in a new 30 mile section of the Cumberland Trail north of Chattanooga. If anyone has some time on their hands in May or June, they could sure use the help. I plan on spending several yet-to be-determined dates working on the project. Here's a link with more info;

My new home is 5 minutes from the southern terminus of the Cumberland Trail. It starts high on the Cumberland Escarpment at a place known as Signal Point. Signal Point is part of the National Park Service system, and is a historic battlefield area. Signal Point overlooks the City of Chattanooga and the Grand Canyon of Tennessee where the Tennessee River wends its way through a gorge. Its a real pretty area.

The trail will one day go from Signal Point all the way to Kentucky. A length of over 400 miles. Pretty cool, eh? It was no small part of me buying a home in Signal Mountain, TN. In addition to being 7-8 degrees cooler (year round) than Chattanooga, close proximity to hiking trails (not to mention good schools) is always a plus.

Will it connect up with the existing long trail in KY? Daniel Boone? White Turtle? Or is it still called the Cumberland Trail in KY?

Got, does it connect up with the Sheltowee Trace trail in KY?


Nevermind. Just did a bit of looking around. The Cumberland trail terminates must farther west along the KY-TN border than I orignally thought. The Sheltowee Trace trail starts at the eastern end of their common border.

Too bad.
