I've heard of some trail traditions/challenges like the Half Gallon Challenge. Where can I find out about all the different traditions and exactly what they are?

"I have no doubts that all of us together will continue to encourage one another, stick together, and make it all the way to Katahdin. God has truly blessed us all." -- Jangles, last 2 sentences of her entry located at my top link.
Special note: She and her hiking companions expect to finish next week.

Yeah. I saw that already. I didn't know if there was an official list anywhere.Originally Posted by fiddlehead
The origins of most of these traditions or challenges are probably obscure. Participation is optional and in the case of at least some of these traditions, they are not observed by even the majority of hikers.
Pirate has a tradition of taking a dump on the Mason/Dixon line then heading back south. Half gallon of ice cream? How dumb.

As I asked in a previous thread on this topic.....How far back do most of these "traditions" go?...I did most of my long distance hiking in the early-mid 70`s and I never heard of most of the items on the list someone posted
Sometimes you can't hear them talk..Other times you can.
The same old cliches.."Is that a woman or a man?"
You always seem out-numbered..You don't dare make a stand.
Not sure if or when I might do a thru, but thank you and L. Wolf for sparing my sanity. This sounds like one tradition better left to the young and gullible.Originally Posted by Footslogger
I'm with you... all 1,000 miles I did of the AT was pre 1978... never hear of any of these "traditions" be it in GA, ME or in between!Originally Posted by Programbo
Part of the character of AT hiking culture is that it is ever changing. Things that are important to hikers one year may be unknown to hikers other years. It is the differences that make each crop of thru-hikers a new and unique folk group.Originally Posted by Programbo
