well if you wish go to http://thebackpacker.com/trips/ for the details and to sign up for the trip - its a bushwhacking trip in the Eagle Creek and Little Ugly Creek area of Sipsey - and yes its the Sipsey WA in the WIlliam F Bankhead NF - as bushwhack trips go it will probably be easier than most since the basecamp is not too far into the Sipsey
Note thebackpacker.com/trailtalk forum (aka TT) can be a rough place to enjoy and in fact some recent unpleasantness has driven many away from the forum apparently including Ewker and a few other people who now contribute to WB - what I am saying is that if you don't have a strong sense of humor or you take yourself too seriously TT may not be a nice place for you - some people on other forums refer to the place as the Darkside - personally I consider the forums over on backpacker.com to be the darkside but ... in any case Ewker and I have hiked with many of the TTers and they are good people but on the forum especially in the fuego section they can come across as real AHs if you don't look for the humor in the postings. Trolls are common and until you are known to be real don't be upset when people refer to you as a troll. Equally learn to ignore the trolls or people that just rub you the wrong way - remember at all times wrestling with a pig only gets you dirty and the pig likes it - I just wish more people here would understand that basic fact. Personally I think that TT is in a rebuilding phase at this time and it may get back to being an interesting place to hang out but for now well ... I don't know what to say - if you ever hung around talk.bizarre you might get a good feel for it currently especially as TT enters the month of Oct. and many people change to their Holloween names.
HOI, you nailed it. IMO there is nothing on no one on WB (some are close)that even compares to what goes on over at TT.

anyone have a site where you can get a fairly accurate temp for Springer Mtn

This should be pretty close.

Thanks Skids...lol
All I could find was the temps for the park. Just didn't know how much to subtract to get an approx temp at the top

Not really, but just wanted to get this thread up for any last minute opportunities for hikers! Even if you havent posted, please, feel free to join us if you can make it!
I hope to be arriving around 4-5pm Friday. OMG! Just realized... north bound out of ATL on Friday, of a holiday weekend (Columbus) and its the main route to Helen, GA... well, might not make 5pm after all.
See you all there! (I have white blazes for us when you get there!)

You all have a lot of fun and watch for those those bears I heard reports on. Lots of them, droolin, carrying on. Two coyote reports too.....ridgerunner said they looked pretty hungry. We can also throw in a few cougar reports in there too, why not.
Make sure you get pictures of all of them.....especially of the Grizzly Bear that Bill Bryson put on the cover of his book.

I will be leaving Nashville around 5:30PM (CDT). I figure I won't get there until 10-11PM (EDT).
Not sure if I will sleep in the car or just carry my sleeping bag to the shelter.
How far from where I have to park to the shelter 1-2 miles??
White Blazes, eh....cool
thanks ALHG

If you are going to the shelter behind the visitors center at Amicalola, its about 75-100 yards from the parking lot. the Shelter is on the left side of the trail, but not right next to it. There is a short (100 foot?) side trail leading to it.
It looks like I won't be camping this weekend. My son is coming home from college late on Saturday afternoon, and I have the GATC business meeting Saturday, as well. I may try to dayhike up to Springer after the GATC meeting, depending on the time.

A bad day on the trail beats a good day most anywhere else.
OK this is my last check of this thread - I expect to arrive at Springer around 5pm or so this evening - I'll probably just setup near Springer shelter but if I am there early enough I may swing by AFSP to say hi
oh well off to finish packing
I should be in around 7pm!

Springer was covered with bear droppings, at least 6 inches deep!!!
Great times!
Thanks to AlHikerGal for putting this together. A fun and friendly group showed up on Springer last night. We shared stories, ate, laughed, and generally had a blast.
Here's a link to a few photos.
