I'd like to find a place to stay in Great Barrington so I can visit Arlo Guthrie's "Guthrie Center" there. Anybody know of relatively inexpensive lodging?

Nothing is going to be "cheap" this time of year thanks to all the leaf peepers that come up from NYC. Are you going to have a car? Arlo's place is a pretty good hike from downtown GB.
Was trying to respond earlier, but a hacker screwed that up
Welcome to the Northeast and to WB
I would much rather be anywhere on a trail right now
than just sitting in front of some computer reading about it.
and the waving welcome! i don't have a car. thought i'd hitchhike. am walking on the at from new york to new hampshire to see fall colors. my pilgrimage to arlo's may have to wait for another trip.
Arlo ain't doing s**t but sittin around drinkin $30 red wine. Ask him if you can throw down on his lawn. If you had some herb that would solidify the deal.Originally Posted by makemerry
Hey MM, if you want to see Arlo, he's not so far off the beaten path nor is it too difficult to get to his place. He's located right on Division Street immediately adjacent to some freight train tracks. The AT trail is due east of him by give or take 3 miles, by my rough estimate.Originally Posted by makemerry

I'd rather lodge at Dave Gilmour's place.
does Gilmour have a place in the Berkshires?Originally Posted by L. Wolf

I've been trying for two days to find the link to make a new post on a different topic. Can anyone tell me where it is? Thanks.
monument mtn is the cheapest motel in great barrington, but they also change there prices drastically for the season. we just stayed there a couple weeks ago and it was $100. During the off season 2 yrs ago we stayed for $60.
There's a family in Great Barrington that takes in hikers. The wife and I stayed with them in the summer of 05, great people they are. They had a notice in the outfitter that was a little south of town, but I've heard that the outfitter went out of business. I'd bet they've put up a notice at some other shops in town that are likely to draw hikers.
There were actually two outfitters on the south side of GB (at different times). Both are now long gone. GB has really changed alot... it's really YUPPYville. Most of the stores in town really market and cater to the affluent. There really isn't a true hiker hangout any longer. There is one place that may have up some notices. I haven't been there for a few years now, but it is located on the east side of Rt.7 just north of Serles Castle (now a private school). I believe the building was once a gas station.
