Most Hiker Friendly Towns
You listed unfriendly trail towns in another post.which ones would WBers rate most friendliest
i had a great time in palmerton. i found most trail towns to be friendly.
Up this way it's Gorham, Rangley, Monson, and Millinocket.

Enjoyed almost every town, too. There are the obvious ones like Hot Springs and Damascus that are small and have all services and are really geared to hikers. Monson, Erwin.
Pearisburg was a surprise because their economy is not at all dependent on hikers. People there were extremely friendly, offered rides several times when we weren't even asking. It was a bit spread-out but still walkable.
There were towns like Rangely ME or Franklin NC which were very hiker-friendly but only because of people like Bob O'Brien & Ron Haven who drove hikers all over.
Palmerston
My last section ended in Palmerton (Lehigh Gap.) Nice town. Good room, good eats, good beer.

I'd have to list almost every trail town I stopped in. Of course, Hot Springs and Damscus are very special, but so are all the others. It would be easier to list my least favorite towns -- the ones that were easiest to leave.don't forget Hot Springs, NC!

Port Clinton!
I loved Port Clinton! I know, I know--no laundry, no groceries, no hostel, etc., but we're talking FRIENDLY, right?
The people in PC are so helpful, kind and truly interested in the welfare of hikers. The Post Office is very accommodating. Residents (esp FRED and BOB) will do almost anything to aid a hiker--and they never ask for money for any of their services.
PC Hotel/Restaurant has yummy food, good prices and puts up with Hiker Trash in the most amenable way.
I have always appreciated the commitment and willingness of the church people that keep up the Pavilion and provide drinking water so unselfishly.
These people all do what they do and expect nothing in return!
However, Hot Springs is still my FAVORITE!

definitely Hot Springs. I love that you walk into town thinking "oh, it's another small town I'll blow right through." And then four days later you wake up from your haze (purple or otherwise) and you can't figure out how you're ever going to leave.
But then, ignorant Yankee that I am, asked the waitress at the diner how much longer my food was going to take, and I think I may have burned all my bridges in that town.
West Hartford
I've got fond memories of the people in many trail towns, but for me, the one town where everyone seemed friendly was West Hartford, VT.
Not Counting Hanover......
In no particular order, my favorite places to visit are Franklin, Hot Springs, Erwin, Damascus, Pearisburg, Harpers Ferry, Duncannon, Willliamstown, Dalton, East Andover, and Caratunk.
Oh, and for obvious reasons, Dennis Cove (Hampton) TN.
Monson, Monson, Monson. . . as DawnTreader (The Dude) says, stop by Lulu's she'll fix great food while giving you unforgettable conversation.
Dalton, you've probably either been there or heard of it, Tom, Birdcage, Cookie Lady, great trail friendly network in this town.
Andover - Stratton Great towns. And if you're in Rangely, Bob at Pine Ellis makes up the difference for the distance to town. Especially after an afternoon in one of his canoes. Beautiful human being.

Harpers Ferry has been very Jester friendly.
I've always felt welcome in every town I've passed through. Love Ducannon, though.
Palmerton!
Nice lady gave us a ride into town despite our wetness (it was raining), nice care package provided by the local businesses via the Girlscout troop, clean bunkroom and shower at the "jailhouse", grocery store clerk told us to go get a free apple, nice library folks, etc. And a quick hitch out of town despite the "early hour" - 6:45 am.
Manchester Center, VT
Yes, it is a little too upscale for most but it has some great advantages:
- Usually an easy hitch into town
- Best bookstore on the trail
- Movie theater in town
- Two well run outfitters
- Health food store
- Hiker friendly hostel
