    Default mountaineer falls shelter update

Just in time for the barrage of '07 NOBO's...

A loft has been completed which increases occupancy level by 3 or 4 depending on the way hikers sleep. Originally, there was a "partial" loft that was not really intended for sleeping, though. (Bob says "Thanks, Touk!! )

Looks nice. When I stopped by, the roof had been on 2 days and there were no benches yet. Great place to stop out of the rain.

Speaking of the roof, out of the rafters we removed a nice, little dwelling of a small, furry shelter mate. The little bugger is probably busy rebuilding at the moment...

What are the map coordinates (longitude-latitude)?

Don't have the slightest clue what the coordinates are but it is located a mile and a half north of Walnut Mountain Rd. Hope that helps.

Actually, I believe it is about 1.5 mi South of Walnut Mt Rd. I don't know the coordinates to the shelter, either. However, using Topo USA, the coordinates to Walnut Mt Rd, where the AT crosses are:

    - N36 degrees 13.187 minutes
    - W82 degrees 0.219 minutes

Not sure if that is the proper way to write the coordinates ... but, anyway...

It was north of Walnut Mt. road when we built it last May. Who moved it?

Each time I've been out there I seem to have hiked South on the AT from Walnut Mt Rd. See this link: http://www.tehcc.org/News2005to2006/news200607.html. Scroll down to 2006 Damascus Hard Core article.

But what do I know. Most of the times when I do trail maintenance with the group, I have no idea which direction I'm traveling on the trail (and I always carry the maps). At any rate, it is somewhere near Walnut Mt Rd...

Default Which way did I go ????

Well, I thought I hiked south to get to the shelter site the day we worked on it. But then I am from Australia & many things in the US seem back-to-front for us......... I mean you guys have Christmas in winter...how weird is that ;-)

    Cheers,

I just went back and read the note Bob sent me before we started. It is in fact south of Walnut Mt. road! Damn, I hate when that happens! It looks like senility may not be as much fun as it's cracked up to be. Sorry 'bout that.

Can't give you the coordinates but I know that it sits between 9 - 10 miles north of Apple House Shelter (just before 19E). Reason I remember that was Bob Peoples telling me last year when we worked on the project that Mountaneer Falls was half way between Apple House and Moreland Gap shelters.

Well, as already "established", it is approx 1.5 mi S of Walnut Mt Rd. So follow the purple line (AT) until it is that far away from the road. It is probably near the "New Relocation" arrow but where the stream crosses...

Yeah, it's in TN. I suppose you figured that out though...

Your welcome, veteran. If you are planning to visit it sometime, be aware that the trailheads might not be the "safest" places to park a vehicle. However, I don't believe it is as bad as it used to be. A day-hike is "probably" okay, though.

I stayed at the blue-blazed campsite near Mountaineer Falls in 2005, and there had been a very recent burn south of it.

Is the shelter on the same site as the campsite?

I don't know if it is on the same site or not. But if not, it's probably close...
