Probably the Bear Mtn. bridge. Take the train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie, take a cab from there to Bear Mtn. Bridge. There's also the AT Train station.... near Pauling?

If you're taking a bus from Pittsburgh to NYC, the bus'll drop you off at Port Authority. It's an easy and entertaining walk across town from there to Grand Central Station.

    Default Bus

Check out the schedules and routes for Bonanza Bus Line which runs from the Port Authority in NYC thru NY, CT, and into MA. There are different routes but several go close to and cross the AT. I'm sure if you know where you want to get off the driver will stop for you.

does it have to be NY? NJ is only 70 miles from NY and it rocks. bet you could catch a bus to Delware water gap (PA/NJ border) and if your hiking any distance of the AT, than 70 miles will be nothing. NJ rocks but NY really sucks, the water is terrible and the only good part is Harimon (sp?) state park. the NY grind really sucks, too. in NJ you have the Gap (DWG) and Sunfish pond, awsome flat grassy ridges, high point, secret shelter, and a few good bars.

Check out this webpage for a myriad of ways to get to the AT from NYC car-less.

http://www.coachusa.com/shortline/ is the web page for the bus that runs from the port authority to the Bear Mountain Inn.

http://www.martztrailways.com/from-nyc.asp is the web page for the bus that runs from the port authority to Stroudsburg / DWG.

I am thinking of a section hike from DWG to Bear Mountain and
it looks very convenient to park at Bear Mountain Inn, hop a bus to NYC and then to DWG, and end up close to the trail on both ends.
