Default Ralph's Peak Hiker's Cabin (NY)

Is this shelter, actually a restored farmhouse, still around? It got high marks in George Steffanos' online book about his 1983 thru-hike, "Then The Hail Came" (http://www.skwc.com/exile/Hail-nf.html). The book is very good by the way.

Its nice a bunk type cabin. I hammocked outside. Noseeums were giving the residents some hell that night (june 2011).Pump for water and the privy was well maintained.

I've read here and there that food delivery is available from this shelter. Is that still true? Planning a CT-NY section hike either in late March or early April and a little less food to carry and prepare would be great!

    Thanks!!

Last September we were able to order some excellent food from a local pizza/italian joint. We had a short walk out to the road to meet the delivery guy.

I wouldn't call it a house. It's a cinder block building about the size of a garage. It's still a nice stop on a thru.

Does anyone have some current info on this shelter? I'm starting my short NY-CT section Friday and would like to know if you can order delivery from the shelter. I'd be more than happy to save on some additional food weight. Thanks!!

We ordered from an italian restaurant last September...they delivered to the road that runs within 100 yards of the shelter. Menus were in the shelter. good food too.

Yeah they pizza is good and if you're heading SOBO you'll hit a deli 0.2 mi off trail a few miles before the shelter as well.

I did a day hike by here last year and I seem to remember a door on this shelter - and reading/hearing it is locked up in the winter. Does anyone know if this is true? I was thinking on doing an overnighter in mid November and possibly staying here - I do not wish to have an unplanned surprise. Can I count on staying here and how about the water source

When the National Park Service aquired the property there was a house and garage on it. The shelter is what's left of the house after the rest of it was taken down.

Yes the shelter gets closed up every year right before hunting season. So as for mid November it might be iffy. But there's plenty of space to put up a tent.

It was definitely open in mid April a couple years ago - not sure how much earlier than that.
