You might want to write Skyline here at WB; he knows the area very well.

looking at the 2006 Companion it looks like the Country View Motel on US 33 phone (540) 298-0025 is fairly hiker friendly

Madame and I stayed at the Elkton Motel last October. It is about a mile or so West of the Country View Motel and closer to Elkton. Prices are about the same. Both motels appear to be Mom and Pop's , nothing real fancy but more than adequet. The Elkton Motel let us send a mail drop. The town of Elkton is about a mile West of the motel. It has a laundry, Ace hardware, grocery store, convenience store, and a couple of restuarants. Everything is a little spread out. We were able to catch rides from and back to the trail.

I just replied to your e-mail privately. Agree Country View Motel would be your most hiker-friendly choice, tho if they happen to be full the other one would be OK.

Are there still 3 hotels there? Which one is the most hiker friendly and near restaurants? If nothing is walkable, is there a delivery pizza? Is it easy to hitch from Swift Run Gap, or is the downhill walk easy and safe?

The Country View Motel is still there as well as the Misty Mountain Motel, both are still open. Call Michael Betts, Operator/Manager of the Blue Ridge Country Store & Deli at 540-298-9826 and ask him about which motel he recommends. Michael caters to thru hikers at his business, accepting packages and is partnered with one of those above mentioned establishments. As far as a hot meal, you can get ready made deli sandwiches there at his store, and I believe he may even shuttle you into Elkton for a meal. Pizza Hut and Ciro's both have delivery pizza if that's what you want. When you give him a call , mention that you want to stay at the motel near his store and if he's available , I'm sure he will be happy to come and get you. The walk from the Swift Run Entrance station is the motel is 3 miles, very doable but not much shoulder room to walk, therefore I'd either get Michael to pick you guys or get a hitch at the gap.

Swift Run Pool & Campground is next to the Blue Ridge Country Store and is a popular place during the summer. Nice place~Inexpensive too.
