I getting the last of my gear together.

One Maxim is "cotton kills!". I can say, from first hand, that, at least, cotton never dries on the trail. On the New Years excursion to Springer, the clouds settled in, my jeans and tee got damp and were still damp when I got home two days later.

So, I'm stamping out cotton. I have synthetic cargo pants, tee's and thermo's, gloves and hat and wool socks. I can't find underwear without cotton.

Any suggestions of a brand and source? I'd like to avoid mail order for this small purchase. UPS has made enough from me this spring.

Yeah at walmart look for the ones that are hanging on a rack, not the big packs of industrial ones. They're called "Life" by Jockey. I recommend trying them out for a while before hitting the trail.. some have seams in weird places

Commando is an option, but some like the boys to have some support. Microfiber briefs and boxers are sold at Target and WalMart these days.

I tried commando in Ex-Officio Buzzoff converts & had real bad burning balls.

I use nylon running shorts w/ a liner now for smooth sailing.

I plan on carrying running shorts. 100% nylon shorts with nylon liner. The good ones are very light, and they double as swimming shorts, and can be worn around decent company.

I bought 2 pair from LL Bean, synthetic, wicking, Don't know if they are in the catalog but you could call them. Nylon boxers are available everywhere. Any good outfitter should be able to get synthetic jockey shorts. Cotton sucks, except for bandanas. Be aware that I lost 50 pounds thru hiking and I was not the only one. Many males lose between 15 and 35 pounds so be prepared for a new waist size. I ended up purchasing new shorts and underware after about 800 miles. Funny, the ones I started with and sent home all fit today and the ones I purchased along the trail are all waiting fot my next long distance weight loss.

I got a pair of Jockey Life like FD recommended. Just bought one pair to test.

Interesting that they don't have a fly. They are very comfy. As a test (just a test I tell you!!!) I have been wearing them for several days without washing.

I gotta say they are very "funk" resistant. I'm on day three and they still pass the "sniff test" with flying colors.

Two pair will be plenty for the trail.

BTW these Plebian Jockies cost $7 a pair, so I guess the $17 model isn't totaly out of line. <G>
