Default Advice on my next NC hike

My next solo will either start at Max Patch and head south for 40 miles or so, or start at Devils Fork Gap (about 35 miles north of Hot Springs) and head north. Which one is the most scenic, easier, water availability etc.

They both are good trips. Max Patch south sounds like just the northern half of the Smokies. Not nearly as crowded, good views but big climbs out of Davenport Gap.

Devil's Fork north gets you thru Erwin and into the NC balds. These are my personal favorites of the region. Views depend on the weather, which will change frequently while you are there.

Max Patch south will get you to one of the best hostels in one day. Standing Bear Hostel is fantastic. But then you have an almost constant uphill onto the Smokies to Newfound Gap.
