Howdy! We are looking to do a day hike in NC in June. What would you do, Max Patch or Roan? Around Roan I have seen pics of Hump Mtn, it looks cool...any thoughts? thanks!!

roan.
rhododendruns should be at their peak 3rd or 4th weekend in june.
I'm going with Roan as well. While Max Patch is definitely a spectacular scenic vista, the Roan area has 'em one after the other. Check out the Blue Blaze after Round and Jane Bald that heads up to Big Grassy. Very Nice site in a saddle with a great spring just a few hundred feet past the campsite.
That's my dog, Echo. He's a fine young dog.
The NC/TN border straddles the Roan Highlands. Grassy Ridge (side trail) and Hump Mt have 360 degree views with other views from Round and Jane Balds, Little Hump and along the grassy ridges leading to those summits (i.e. Houston Ridge).
The 14 miles from Carvers Gap to Rt. 19E is probably one of the most beautiful day hikes, in clear weather, in the 10-15 mile range on the entire Appalachian Trail with the Franconia Ridge (circuit) and Bigelow Range being the others.
Happy trails!
Roan. The day hike I would do actually doesn't cross Roan Mtn itself. I'd start at Carver Gap and hike north over Round Bald, out toward the Overmountain Shelter (5 miles away). Big Hump is a couple of miles past the shelter, but doable as a long round trip. Beautiful area.

If you wanted pics, you should have said so!
Any permits required for sectioning the area?
SummitPost has good pages for these and other area mountains.
Here's the one for the Roan Highlands: http://www.summitpost.org/area/range...highlands.html
Browse around the site for other peaks, photos, maps, routes, other beta, and nice external links.
Someone posted a really good article on the Roan Highlands on Wikipedia:
