Default Documentary on the AT - need help with providing info

I got an e-mail from the Japanese version of PBS.. They are working on a documentary about the AT and are looking for some information about the AT. One of the things they asked me was about a past hiker who was also a Marine and was one of the first casualties of the war. I have to admit I do not know him, but apparently he may have been a past AT hiker or thru-hiker. So I am looking to see if anyone out there knows him from the trail.

His name is Lt Terry Shane Childers (I think he went by Shane). Here is a link that includes pictures of him: http://www.citadel.edu/pao/newsrelea...ane_ctnow.html

Other than that, I think they may be at Trail Days - so be on your best behavior.

From the history at the link, this fellow must have hiked the AT back in the late 1990's? Here are links to the pics of him -- maybe someone here will recognize him:

I wonder what war they're talking about? WWII, Vietnam, Korean, Gulf or the present one? If it's WWII, that should make the job of finding out something about him a little easier perhaps?

From the article "a Marine lieutenant killed during the opening hours of Operation Iraqi Freedom, shot in the stomach while leading his platoon in an assault on a pumping station at the Rumeila oil fields of southern Iraq." and "Shane was born in West Virginia in 1972"

I remember reading something here about someone who put on presentations at either a gathering or TD who did not make it back from Iraq. I'm not sure, but this might be the same person.
