Pre-Fontana Dam AT Route

Does anyone know how much of the original pre-Fontana Dam trail in the Smokies remains? It originally followed the crest south past Gregory Bald and down to Tapoco to cross the Little Tennessee River, then up the crest of the Yellow Creek Mountains to Walker Gap, where it met the present day routing. I was thinking about a "historical" loop hike and didn't know how much was still viable trail.
