    Default Wild Cowboy???

Looks like he's on the trail and averaging 27 per day!

    Check here... http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=236164

Well, maybe not WC, but let's see how long this guy can maintain this pace.

Says he's looking to average 30/day...impressive average if he can maintain it. He's also super light... "Pack and gear weighs in at 6 pounds. That puts total weight at just under 20 when considering water carried."

Wild Cowboy is Lonnie Owens of Tucson, AZ

This is the first - and last press report available. There was a video interview clip at one time that showed glimpses of his planned itinerary but it isn't retrievable online any more. http://www.kvoa.com/Global/story.asp...9&nav=HMO6HMaW

Bunch of BS anyway. 72 miles per day on paper was all it ever was.

If you flip that "72" around you get "27" which is what he is doing.

Maybe the quoted 72 miles a day was just a typeo. He meant to say he was going to do "27" a day.

Not to be a negative nancy, but he's only done it for 5 days so far. It's a marathon not a sprint.

That being said, there's no way I would/could hike 5 consecutive 30's from Springer to NOC.
Anything's within walking distance if you've got the time.

If he already has sore knees, which the transcriber says, he's in trouble. Not a good thing to do first starting out - marathon hiking. You will regret it...

Yeah, but if he is doing 30's in GA, he will likely have no problem doing 40's through the middle states.

He'll make it in 30 days in a dyslexic world. 72 is the average to do it in a month.Wasn't that the original goal?

Think someone said that the record for an unsupported thru was something like 42 days? Gabriel won't bust that record but I'm impressed with 575 miles in 19 days...30 miles a day from Springer to this point in VA is tough with a capital T.

1990 60.5 days unsupported ward leonard. (around 36 miles and change per day avg, to beat that) the overall trail mileage was less back then

... though not by much. I forget whether it was 2150 or 2135, in 1990. So at most, 40 miles out of 2175.

hes doing great, doing his own thing! too bad he had to zero, that really kicks up the mpd avg. i drew up a 60 day hike and on day 19 (pickle branch shelter-BALLPARK)222.4 miles farther north on day 19... (ward was one bad mother) hope his knees hold up,and more importantly he has fun

J.JOE. DID HE ACTUALLY SAY HE WANTED THE RECORD OR JUST TO MAINTAIN 30 PER DAY? as long as he's having fun. hard to think his knees hurt carrying less than 20 pds. anyone know how much ward carried? he is kicking pretty good, but he might even slow down just to smell the roses? an injury is not the only thing that could change his mind, and his hike! wish him the best
