Bobcat on the trail

I have thought i heard them at night on this section of trail. Doggiebag seems to have seen one. Picture is blurry but way cool

Wow, that's amazing that Doggiebag was able to get so close to one, having a dog companion. You would think that they would just smell the dog, and run away. I've been out of the loop for a while. Is he still hiking with his dog?

Yes, looks just like a bobcat.

I just saw a bobcat near where the AT crosses Route 23 in Great Barrington, MA on July 20, 2007. The bobcat paused and looked at me, but I took to long getting my camera out and then the bobcat walked into some high grassy area. That was my very first AT sighting of a bobcat!

Why do you think it looks like a coyote? No arguments given for either side yet.

Great photo either way. It's rare enough just getting a shot of a bear, even in SNP.

The eye shine looks yellowish to green, which is consistent with bobcat. I think coyotes' would be green to blue.

Note the small ears, the oversized paws and the lack of a long tail -- all are consistent with a bobcat. Coyotes have big ears, normal sized paws and long hairy tails.

also note the light reflecting off the eyes. cats' eyes are reflective in that way while dogs' are not. assuming it's not a doctored photo...

According to Petersen's Field Guide to the Mammals of North America, by Burt and Grossenheiden, a bobcat's eyes reflect greenish-yellow, which I think is consistent with what we see in that photo. According to the same reference, a coyote's eyes also shine greenish-yellow and that is consistent with dozens of coyotes' eyes I've seen shine at night.

I've never seen a bobcat in the woods (in captivity, yes) but I did see a lynx at night in Quebec. I'd bet that's a bobcat in that photo.

I also did some googling on dogs' eyes. Some breeds do NOT reflect light, but most do, and there is considerable color range: yellow, white blue, green.

But whatver, it's a great photo.

this past June, around the 20, my son and I were hiking south from Harper's Ferry through the SNP. I turned a corner near Manassas Gap and came face to face with a bobcat about 50 feet away. It had turned a corner on a switchback, and froze for just a moment, then turned and seemed to just flow into the brush like water from a stream. Beautiful sight. Wish I had a camera ready, but it moved so fast I doubt I'd have been able to get a good shot unless I'd had the camera already aimed. Nice to see that someone was ready to get off a quick snap shot.

I have seen a couple of bobcats in SE KY in recent years.Most people will have heard bobcats at night but rarely get to see one.This photo definitely shares the characteristics of the Bobcat.Lucky to get photo,for sure.
