    Default Avery Memorial Lean-to

Avery Memorial Lean-to is reported by Maptech to be north of Horns Pond Lean-tos, ME and south of Little Bigelow Lean-to, ME.

    Description
This lean-to was built and named in honor of the founder of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club. It can sleep 6 and has water from a small spring downhill from the lean-to. There are also tent platforms available. Stoves only; no fires.

    Coordinates
    45° 8’ 53” N
    70° 16’ 59” W

I can find no current information on the shelter. Is it still there? I’m planning a section hike and this might be one of my overnights. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

The shelter has been removed, but it is still possible to tent-camp in the immediate area. Great spot, beautiful mountain.

Was just there a few nights ago. In fact we camped there. Can confirm that the lean-to is no longer there.

There is now a campsite there though, Avery Memorial Campsite, and there is still a plack stating the Lean to was built in honor of Avery, but it is not longer there. Nice camping area though, water source comes and goes with the weather, it has been awefully dry here lately so this campsite did not have any water source as of 2 days ago.

According to the AT Data Base, Avery Memorial Campsite is located 0.4 miles South of Bigelow Mountain (Avery Peak) and 0.3 miles North of Bigelow Mountain (West Peak). As already noted the Memorial Leanto has been removed.

It's a great spot, and for some reason I always meet cool people there.

They are correct. I was just there a month or so ago and they do have a platform to put a tent on and they also have a canopy set up over the platform. Nice area, spring is within 50 to 75 ft. I did meet some nice people there camping out for a couple of nights.
