Default Kilts; where are you finding them?

    Thinking about trying something new.

Those of you that use hiking kilts, where do you get them? I haven't been able to locate them on the usual sites (campmor, ems, rei, etc.) Thanks in advance.

I love hiking with my kilt in the east...didn't care much for it out west.
checkout summer weight and winter weight and dress appropriately for the season.
    kilts work great.

    Thanks geek!

Those things aren't cheap are they!?! Can you really put a price on comfort? Apparently so; it's about $80.

I don't know if this is a good alternative or not. It's hard to tell any detail but it may be worth a try? Perhaps someone with sewing experience could tell us just how difficult this might be.

I've seen utilikilts with a booth at a couple of pride festivals. They'll fit you and let you try on a variety of kilts... Of course pride is in the summer so it might be a long wait

You could just buy a $25 dollar woman's skirt from columbia and slit it at the hips. The Damascus and Hot Springs outitters probably have some of the old cancelled mountain hardwear ones.

This is the one I used (and still have) on my thru in 2003. Nothing fancy but gets the job done.

This is a better price though ...

    Default E-bay

I found a pretty decent wool kilt for only $80 on E-bay a year or so ago, and the seller had tons of them. It took some alterations (sewing down the pleats, for instance) to make it look respectable, but given that it's durable and cheap it makes for a great outdoors kilt.

I made my hiking kilt (the one I was wearing at TD 07) & all of my other 4 kilts.

Here are all the kilt sites I have:
    http://www.sportkilt.com/departments...Hiker-kilt.cfm
    https://secure.utilikilts.com/index....PROD&ProdID=46
    http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Stillwater-Kilts/
I'm going to get one or 2 of the Stillwater kilts to hike in, they are (I think) lighter than my homemade one, which is wool.
I'll be getting the Gordon tartan, which is my family tartan

I wear a sport kilt, but the Mountain Hardware kilts are pretty popular.

I bought one for Green Hornet this summer while he was on the AT. He said he loved it.

I love my sport kilt, bought it way back for $50 - $60. I like mine so much (Black Stuart) that I may get another one. The selection is much greater now since I got mine and they even have several of clans that I can claim. Looking at the McLaren.
They are warm and cool at the same time, no restriction of movement, no chafe, and the looks from non-hikers are priceless. Just did an 8 mile loop in the Whites two days ago; it was cold in the AM and hot in the PM, and I was fine the whole time. And, I've never been bitten there, either...

Thanks for all the posts! I'll get something soon. First I have to go practice sitting like a girl without squishing anything.

Mountain Hardwear's kilt is about $50. I love mine. Real kilts, which are usable as God intended them to be, cost about $500, but nae Sassenach may wear them.

I looked at a clan specific kilt that I could have bought (card carrying clan member; NOT KLAN) for a measly $1,400! Thought I was gonna fall over.

If ever in Seattle, drop into Utilikilts. They do orders via the phone and internet as well. And they fit guys with beer bellies as well You see a LOT of U. Kilts out here.

Any kilt that is using 7-8 yards of fabric is going to cost you. I have a regular and hiker sportkilt. I like them both. I have a utilikilt that looks like the worst of gym shorts with white stripes on the sides which I would love to sell. Heavy too.

Buy the fabric, wear it the proper way, not the way some heathen designer thinks, and it's also your blankie, the way God meant it to be. Far cheaper.
