So what do I tell the boss to make him not fire me on the spot (or tp allow me to return) when I tell him I want to leave for 5-6 months??? Any suggestions?

Tell him you want a leave of absence and why. If you get fired, find a new boss.

Ok, it is more like I had to retire to make it happen. Maybe my next job will be a split between being a Ridgerunner for the Smokies and working at the local outfitter so I have some freedom to hike.

My experience has been that if you were indispensable to the success of the company, you'll be welcomed back with open arms. If you were just a warm body, he'll move on. Which were you?

Not sure what much of this has to do with "Legends" of the trail, but it would be a fascinating, and popular, thread on its own if someone created it.

I tell my wife for every week that I will be away from her hiking will let me live 3 extra weeks so there will be a net gain in how long I will be healthy and alive with her. lol...maybe true too.

PS Do You have a favorite 100 mile stretch of Trail on the AT that You would share with me as I am a section hiker..will be skipping parts of Trail that don't interest me..ie will not have time for.
I met my first wife (1978-1995) on a group day hike on the Connecticut AT in the fall of 1973 (shortly after my first AT thru-hike). She was a member of the 1975 UCONN AT Circle Expedition; the first woman to complete the Connecticut AT Superhike (56 miles in 24 hours); and, I proposed to her atop Belvidere Mt during our summer 1978 LT end-to-end hike. We also hiked the John Muir Trail, Pennine Way and the Wonderland Trail together.

I met my second wife (2003-present) on the dance floor at the 2002 Falcon Ridge Folk festival or on the dance floor of the 2002 Dance Flurry (depending on whose version) . One of our first dates was a climb of Katahdin and a 25 mile day hike from Blanchard to Pleasant Pond. She was a member of the 2005 AT Circle Expedition; I hiked with and provided support for her on her 2004 LT end-to-end hike; and, we backpacked the John Muir Trail together.

I can't speak whether a thru-hike would strain a marriage too much. Certainly there have been a few marriages broken up but those relationships probably already had weaknesses in them that the thru-hike attempt only exacerbated. During the Appalachian Trail Institute (see website below), we talk about having your 'domestic front' in order before you take the first step on your thru-hike.

I like any 100-mile section in Maine during August and up to mid-September.
The 100-mile section that has the most diversity is from Big Bald to Watauga Dam.
