    Default Smokies on Dec 7

Planning to be going to the Smokies on Dec 7. Either planning Newfound Gap to Charles Bunion or Mt LeConte via the Alum Cave.

Either of those hikes will be fantastic. Be careful around Leconte if it's icy!

    Thanks...I am already accident prone.

I was about 2 miles north of Newfound Gap in February this year. Ended up turning back at that point because a hundred foot section was just ice. It there were sections of nothing but small glacial formations on trail. At least a foot or two thick. I will have to pack some traction slip-ons or ice skates.

Whats the grade and trail makeup going up the Alum Cave section on Mt LeConte? If its major rock, I will have to look for another section, if its snowing.

If the Smokies end up being icy, I might do Lemon Gap to Max Patch.
