    Default Don't know

I accumulated my gear over several years, and never totaled up the cost. And then again, I have upgraded and changed gear also.

But, just think about the choices that you have. Are you going to make a pepsi can stove, or buy a MSR Simmerlite for $90? Are you going to bring along a $600 camera, or a disposable? Packs go from under $100 to over $300. Same thing for sleeping bags. And, alpine, as a thru-hiker, you know that you see all types of gear out there, and that it's not gear that gets you to Maine.

    Default how much money

I'm just preparing for an AT 2004 hike and these are my basic gear expenses:

Note: everything is in Canadian dollars so adjust accordingly(exchange rate= 0.75 cad to 1.00 US, approx.) I'm also using a lot of clothes that I had already.

    Go-lite Pack......75.00
    sleeping bag......150
    titanium pot.......40
    pop can stove....0
    hiking poles........40
    water pur...........20
    various clothes....200
    guide book..........20
    Hammock............150
    Stove wind screen.10
    shoes..................80
    mini-light.............10
    food storage bag....25
    micra leatherman....25
    sleeping bag liner...30

Total:$875 cad. or about $700 us.

I had a knife/flashlight/pack/sleeping bag...almost everything already but decided to get new stuff in the interests of weight. Going from "traditional" backpacking style to lightweight.
