As the Moderator for that forum, I think that's a very good idea. The MST connects to the AT, and they are making some significant progress on building the trail. The Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail have just announced that they are hiring their first Executive Director - Kate Dixon. This is an exciting development.

Yeah it probably is but it seems many don't like it when trails hire professionals.

Which GET? There's the Great Eastern Trail and the Grand Enchanment Trail.

I think ki0eh was talking about the Great Eastern Trail.

Yeah, let's start writing about the MST. It goes thru some of my old and most favorite areas: Steels Creek/Pisgah, Greentown/Upper Creek/Pisgah, Harpers Creek/Pisgah, and the Trout Lake/Temple of the Gods area around Lost Valley. I just got back from a recent trip in the Greentown/Upper Creek area and it felt good to see the white dots.

Kate's a great hire for the MST. She's well connected and respected in NC. There's still lots of land to get easements on, and her prior experience will serve her well.

That's a tough one. A couple of organizations that count me as a member have recently moved to hiring staff support after many years without it.

On the one hand, there are so many bureaucratic paper dragons nowadays that committed staff can save volunteers from. We in PA still suffer some from a truly bizarre bureaucratic decision concerning road crossings that we simply could not manage by volunteers.

On the other hand, some nonprofits have evolved into staff supporting machines that first look for dollars then for mission. These tend to have affinity VISA cards.

Johnny, I see that you're in Raleigh. Are you hooked in with Jeff & Bruce and what they are doing at Falls Lake?

Sometimes it is exactly what is needed. A trail project can sometimes languish with an all volunteer force. The Cumberland Trail in Tennessee reached that point. When they hired an Executive Director in the late 90s, things started rolling. I think the time is right for the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail. Sometimes when the right candidate comes along, you have to take the opportunity.

Vaguely. I know Jeff from way back, but haven't been actively involved in the Falls section. Yes, I suck. Need to call him today and get on the stick.

Do that. Tell him "Huntdawg" prodded you into it. Jeff & I did the JMT together last year. He's a great guy.
