From what I recall I think the NY trip will be a 20 miler Southbound from NY17 to the NJ line using the wildcat shelter as base. That's what shortbus suggested.

Sounds like good times. I cant say for sure but as of now I am layed off from work, but trying to find job. I would love to go on the shenendoah trip, but I am a ? at this point.
Was looking over the Ny area and just a few things we may need to consider.
1) Only one shelter in that stretch and no other designated campsites.
2) Elevation changes - From 17 to 17a there are number of climbs while not super long they are steep from what I can tell on the maps. this could prove to be a bear with snow and ice.
3) Parking at the NY NJ line there is no parking its a side trail and even then parking may be sketchy. The next parking is 4 miles into NJ making it 21.9 miles total and much tougher trail than Md was.
Just some tings to chew on. We could do Harriman State Park if you wanted to its the other way on the AT.
More shelter options and flatter ground NOBO from NY17 heading to Harriman SP. But that would avoid the big slabs of scary rock ... your call. Either option allows us our needed fire pits .

Sasquatch, you need the South bound section to complete that part dont you? I say we go with that. 22 miles total, that would be 6 miles the first day, 10 the second and 6 on the last.
As far as "campgrounds" I dont need a shelter to sleep at - it would be nice but to keep everyone safe and feeling comfy o this trip - I can adapt !
I am good with how ever you all want.
Soutbound heading to NJ it is! The way I figure ... if it's not challenging - why bother? My clear recollection of the area of that area is huge slabs of rock that was exposed to the weather. The rock faces are the type that would make for difficult footing if snow/ice is present. I'll rope the dog off since he has no fear. At least I can keep him from killing himself if he slid. I'll bring enough for belaying folks as well - if needed. Time to troll Ebay for Crampons. My pack will be equipment heavy and unfortunately food light.
