Helps to be an outcast and just not care. Helps more if trail is more home than home is.

If you jave to ask, you can't afford it.
    Just hike.

I don't think that real hiker trash would require the validation of a third party in order to affirm their hiker trashiness, even if that third party is two babes in a pickup... Though, at the same time, you can't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Well hell I got to page two and have no idea what hiker trash is.

I spend 40-45 hours a week out of about a 50 work week day dreaming about getting out in woods. I try to buy good solid gear and and don't pay to much attention to wieght. As for a shaving I am just to lazy for that
I tried to quit drinking but Captain Morgan keeps kicking Mr. Will Powers ass.

"Hiker trash" is a term like many other "put downs" for groups that are acceptable from one member of the group to another, yet (rightly) resented when used by an outsider to a member of the group. If Rock called me 'hiker trash', I'd be complimented. If some picnic camper referred to me that way as I walked past I would be, ahem, upset.

I've read all the post to this question and there are some good ones. As usual LW shares some of his trail wisdom with respect to this topic. If someone refers to you as hiker trash, politely thank them or ignore them, regardless of who it comes from. It just means you are hard core and you don't always, or seldom, conform to societies definition to "the norm". Hiking and it's many facets dominate your being. If you are hard core, you will exemplify the characteristics without thinking about them because in your mind they don't exist. But for those who wonder, this may be one: Everyone can smell you except yourself.

    Happy hiking.

I have a hiker trash kit that I will gladly sell for 19.95 plus shipping and handling. Guanteed to turn the nicest purist into genuine hiker trash. :You even get a certificate of authenticity. For an extra $12 I will throw in a "kiss me I'm hiker trash" t shirt.

Aw, Weasel, nobody's gonna call you hiker trash, OK?

First off, to achieve that moniker, you have to be seen actually hiking.

Sorry, Wolf's on break, somebody had to say it.......

You're a good fill in Jack. Maybe just work on the brevity.

What do you call hiker trash that doesn't hike?
Am I forum trash, or just trash?

So when someone claims to be a soldier who isn't, or a soldier claims to be something he isn't (like SF) he gets called a wannabe (and other things).

What do you call a person that wants to be hiker trash but doesn't actually hike?

Are you hiker trash when you splurge for a night in an AMC hut and the other guests get up and leave the table when you sit down?

You might be hiker trash if you eat, drink and brush your teeth in the same cup

The true essence hiker trash, like that of zen, or the neijia and aikido, cannot be expressed in words. Suffice it to say, if you have to ask, you ain't. . . .

    But that's OK.
