I have read in trail journals that most SOBO AT hikers will start from Katahdin between Jun 1 and Sept 1. When is the peak period for heading south?

Kinda like nobo -- you're hemmed in by the seasons. Leave too early and you're dealing with snowmelt, black flies, and kickass stream crossings in the 100-mile. Leave too late and you're dealing with a whole lot of cold hiking in the second half of your hike. The window is much narrower for sobos than nobos. Or to put it another way -- cold hiking at the end is pretty much a given.
My best understanding is the majority start between June 20 and July 10.
