Dennis Cove to Erwin isn't the easiest 71 miles, but they are among the most scenic. I think Dennis Cove to Erwin would be a bit easier, simply because the climb out of Erwin with a full pack would definitely be a chore.
But those who've hike this section SOBO would be able to offer better judgement.
If people spent less time being offended and more time actually living, we'd all be a whole lot happier!
The Smokies
Erwin to Hot Springs would be a nice hike - after you climbed out of Erwin like Bearpaw said. Great hike, with some good views and lots to see.
Roan Mtn Carvers Gap to Damascus. Got the high balds, waterfalls, the barn shelter, Kicora Hostel.
Erwin to Hot Springs, or Hot Springs to Erwin. Very historic trail here. Lots of history. The ridgeline ColdSpring to Camp Creek will be a good stroll once you get to the top. There a lot of ups and downs from Erwin to Cold Spring.
Smokies are good. But it can get crowded with tourists, and restrictive on campsites. And some good big long climbs.
